There is a branch of Psychology that deals with the study of human growth and development, and this branch is called “Developmental Psychology”.
What then is Developmental Psychology?
Developmental Psychology is that branch of Psychology that centers on how an infant grows, matures and changes over the course of a lifetime, this includes the physical, cognitive, social, intellectual, perceptual, personality and emotional growth.
Developmental Psychologist has it that a child, when born, passes through four (4) distinct Stages of human development, which are:
- Infancy Stage
- Childhood (early, middle and late childhood) Stage
- Adolescence Stage
- Adulthood (early, middle and old age) Stage.
All these stages are very significant in human development; but, it is important to note here that the most critical stage is the Adolescence Stage.
Imagine how many of us now adults looking back to this stage and laughing about funny, good and some silly mistakes we made back then, and felt a sting of regret wishing you could turn back the clock, knowing that if you had known better, you would not have done most of the silly things then. But, it’s okay, we acted the way we did based on the level of our understanding at that time.
That is how important the Adolescence stage is, it is a stage where personalities are developed and built. But, how then can you develop personalities that will carry you through to adulthood stage when you can barely define who you truly are?
Making mistakes during the childhood stage can easily be corrected in the adolescents’ stage, however, making same mistakes at the adolescence stage, will leave you spending most of your adulthood making corrections, (that is, if you are well guided by a significant adult or a professional Counselor) to live a more fulfilling life.
I don’t think that’s the kind of life we desire for our future generations, no, we do not want them going through the adolescence stage without any form of guidance, this is why Think Counseling Concept has emerged to change the narrative by standing as a guidance to not only the adults but also to the adolescents to inspire, impact and transform their lives through this critical stage of their lives.
